Ants are social insects which live in nests. They have several 'Castes' with specific duties for the survival of the colony. Ants feed on a wide range of foods, from those found in homes to the sugary excretions from plant bugs. They are the most frequently encountered insects in and around the home.
In Australia, Bed Bugs are most commonly found in the accommodation Industry where there is a high turnover of tourists. Bed Bugs are transported with people's luggage and clothing but not on the person and as we all stay in motels or hotels at some stage they can be transported into our homes. Bed Bugs have also been found in second hand furniture and luggage.
Cockroaches have been present on earth for over 300 million years. They are the most common pest of house and restaurants throughout Australia. Many human diseases have been found on the bodies of Cockroaches. These include organisms which cause food poisoning, gastroenteritis, hepatitis and tuberculosis.
Fleas can be pests in homes, hotels, motels and wherever human populations occur, often where these areas are shared with animals. There are many species of ticks, but the species which are most often encountered along the east coast of Australia are the Australian paralysis tick and the brown dog tick.
