The Deloraine Veterinary Centre was purchased in 1985 by Dr Roger Blackwell, who continues as the current owner. Since then, the practice has slowly grown to its current staff of 5 vets and 9 veterinary nurses and support staff. In 1992 Roger started the Westbury Veterinary Centre, and together the 2 clinics became known as Meander Valley Veterinary Service.
In 2004 the Deloraine clinic moved from Emu Bay Road to a much larger building in Beefeater Street. This new location offers significantly more space within the hospital and outside for horse day yards and a stable. We service suburbs throughout the Meander Valley region and also see clients across much of the north and north west of Tasmania and into the northern midlands.

Services
As the practice principal, Roger is the problem solver and second opinion for all the difficult cases. His practice philosophy has been to encourage and facilitate the development of all his staff to advance their skills to the full potential, and loves to teach and encourage.
His own particular interests include mastitis and abdominal surgery for cattle, artificial insemination and embryo transfer for horses, and small animal orthopaedics and soft tissue surgery (the more complicated the better!).Ophthalmology completes an interesting and varied day. In his spare time Roger enjoys horse riding (eventing & showjumping), fishing, bush walking, and spending time with his family.

Kylie first started working at our practice in 2003 as a trainee veterinary nurse, and worked with us for 3 years before moving to Melbourne. During her 6 years in Melbourne Kylie worked in a number of different practices including general practice and also in after hour emergency centres. In 2012 Kylie returned home to Tassie to take on the role of Practice Manager.
All consultations are done by appointment to minimise your waiting time. However, as we are a fully functional hospital, emergencies do arise which occasionally may mean some delays in schedules occur. We have a broad range of skills within our veterinary team, and also have established links for specialist referral if need be.
Dental disease causes pain and suffering for many horses. It is very common and often left untreated through lack of knowledge, or poorly and inadequately treated for a variety of reasons. The importance of regular routine high quality dental care for your horse cannot be overstated, as apart from the needless pain they suffer, there is a real risk of further, even life threatening secondary illnesses and infections.
With the significant dairy industry in the Meander Valley and surrounding areas, our involvement in the industry continues to grow.
We are very strong on providing a cost effective service, and although we certainly still provide care of the individual animal, we are also very keen to see more focus on herd health, both from a preventative and early intervention perspective, as it is in these areas where we can really see a positive financial return to the profitability of the dairy enterprise.

The staff here were amazing - reception fit our cat in to see the vet within two hours, Rowena the vet was so brilliant with both our cat and worried kids, and everyone who came in with animals was looked after so well while we were there. Thank you so much!

We recently need a vet out of hours in a place where we don't live. Meander valley vetinary centre in Deloraine was the nearest and we are so happy that's where we went. It was an emergency and the skills and care they provided are the reason our loved dog Balou is on the road to recovery. I'd recommend them to anyone.
