The company was started by the Chappell family in 1963, who maintained operations until 2014.
Founder A.J 'Bert' Chappell emigrated from England to Australia in 1949 and established himself as a bricklaying contractor before switching to the housing market in the post-war building boom. In 1963 A.J Chappell Proprietary Limited was registered, and in 1975 Bert's son John joined the family business.
