In 1989 my father Bernard packed in his house painting business and set off for two years on a backpacking trek to the remotest corners of the world. When he finally arrived in the oasis city of Kashgar, China, he was so impressed with its history that he decided to start a new life collecting and selling exotic goods from all over the world.
Boho necklaces, ethnic beaded necklaces, contemporary necklaces, necklaces for women, necklaces for men - at Kashgar we specialise in unique, handmade necklaces of every description.

Hand picked by us on or travels or hand crafted in our Northern Rivers workshop from speciality components found in every corner of the globe, our stone necklaces are always finished with sterling silver (unless otherwise stated), and often incorporate antique, vintage, collectable or very special components.
We pick our stationary carefully here at Kashgar. Handmade paper and beautifully decorated, all our stationary products are made within small artisan communities and families. By supporting these products, you are directly supporting the communities that make them, and help encourage small cottage industries to flourish into the 21st century.
When I'm off the road, my husband and I recharge our batteries. It's a day of deep rest and connection with the spiritual, and that can be anything - going for a walk in nature, being in silence, burning incense.

After 25 years of owning a store and selling (amongst many other things) incense sticks and cones, sage and smudge sticks, resins, ash catchers, incense burners, oil burners, charcoal disks and burners, we know what our customers like - premium, natural incense products collected from all over the world, with a touch of the unusual thrown in.Some of our incenses (like the Sai Babba Champa incenses), are staples.
What can we say? We love skulls! Every culture of the world, old or new, has incorporated the symbology of the skull into its art, lore and mythology. The most common use of the skull is as a representation of death, mortality and the nature of immortality. However the skull can have different magical and spiritual overtones, including protection, power, good luck, rebirth and wisdom.

I have always had the hots for Kashgar, right back in the day when it was at the other end of King Street, Newtown.

Not only do you find interesting 'things' here, but you learn interesting things as well.

I love going here for every reason, like time to fill, find a present, get ideas and of course improve my knowledge.

I have heard some wonderful stories from the lovely gentleman who owns the business with his daughter. They just don't tell you want an item is, but everything about it. You end up wanting to buy something so you can take it home and sound intelligent when people

Kashgar is just a delight to wander through.

They have... *everything*. They have a sturdy wooden bed with some very eastern-looking bedspreads and pillow covers, they have bronze statues of Indian goddesses, they have various antiques from who-even-knows-where!

Of course, there are practical benefits too. I saw a rack of kaftans, and who doesn't want a good kaftan? There were even fez's! Fez's! I've never even seen a fez in real life!

They have some of the most magnificent jewelry, as well as the cutest dreamcatchers I've come across in a long while.

I was in the market for a human thigh-bone trumpet and after trying everywhere from K-Mart to Allens Music Store I was ready to give up when I wandered into Kashgar.

Alright I wasn't *really* looking for a human thigh-bone trumpet. But they really have one. And a 120 year old ceremonial Mogul helmet from Rajistan. I was actually in Kashgar perving on the jewellery when these and other unusual delights caught my eye.

I don't think there is an emporium quite like this one anywhere else in Sydney. As well as the usual Nag Champa, Indian jewellery and mirrored cushions, Kashgar searches
