What's the difference between a psychologist, a psychiatrist, and a counsellor (or psychotherapist, or therapist)? Throughout Australia (and most of the world) psychologists are registered by the State. In order to use the title 'psychologist' in NSW you must have a minimum of four years' University training in psychology and two years' prescribed supervision, and you must work within stringent ethical standards.
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is really just looking at the way you think and the things you do as places to implement changes that you would like in your emotional life, or in your life as a whole. CBT is a very popular therapy at the moment.

The major reason for this is that a lot of large scale, well-controlled research has shown that CBT is an effective way to change things for the better; things like depression and anxiety, chronic pain, panic attacks, post-trauma problems and relationship issues.Because of this body of scientific research, CBT is an evidence-based psychological intervention.
