I first became interested in Podiatric Medicine while working in Intensive Care as a registered nurse. I saw how foot pathology could affect the whole body and slow down rehabilitation. I could see how not being able to walk pain free due to foot pathology could lead to other health problems like weight gain, muscle weakness or knee back or hip injury.
Podiatrists are trained to assess, diagnose and treat medical conditions and injuries of the lower limb. Treatments can include soft tissue and joint mobilization, taping and strapping, exercise and stretching programs and orthotic therapies. In some cases immobilisation boots and braces can be used temporarily to rest an injury.
Foot orthotics are devices prescribed to support and treat conditions of the foot and lower limb. They are used as part of a treatment plan in conjunction with exercise and stretching. The process for providing the correct type of orthotics begins with a thorough biomechanic assessment of the foot and lower limb.
