Somercotes (c1823) is one of Australias's most significant cultural and historic properties. These cottages were once occupied by generations of the Hoodless family who emigrated from England. Set amidst enchanting English style gardens, step back in time with our original historic 2 bedroom cottages.
Our farm shop sells freshly picked Tasmanian cherries 7 days a week during the cherry season or you can buy cherries online and we can overnight express them to your door. We are the only cherry stop on the Midland Highway between Launceston and Hobart so come and enjoy our property in the heart of Tasmania and sample our delicious cherries - it will be a highlight of your summer in Tasmania!
The fresh Tasmanian cherries are grown in our orchard at Ross. Tasmania's midlands climate of cold winters and hot dry summers is ideal for cherry production. These conditions give sufficient winter chilling for bud initiation and the heat of summer gives the Somercotes Cherries the high sugars and quality fruit.
You can buy and enjoy delicious, sweet, fresh cherries this summer knowing that they are also looking after their health. Cherries are high in antioxidants, help reduce the risk of cancer, inflammatory problems, and heart disease. They are low in fat, calories, and have a high water content. Cherries are a great addition to meal as they complement almost any sweet or savoury dish.
Somercotes is an excellent base located centrally and close to both Launceston and Hobart as well as the famous East Coast of Tasmania all within an hour and half's drive, making day tripping very easy! Visit the cherry orchard and the local bushland and you may see some native birds such as hawks, magpies, noisy minors, green rosellas and wattle birds, just to name a few.

We just spent 5 days in the Hoodless Cottage at Somercotes and fell totally in love with the spot! The cottage was cozy, the turkeys and rabbits at dusk were lovely - as was the funny lamb that thinks she is a dog. We loved Ross and the surrounding farmlands and towns. We used it as a base to explore the region and even some of the coast. Lovely spot for a short or long stay. (AND THE CHERRIES ARE DIVINE!) Thank you!
