In 1960 Nunzio Sulfaro arrived in Melbourne aboard the 'Roma' as a 'sponsored migrant'. Initially working for a well known Australian company, Nunzio was a highly skilled, highly regarded, formally trained Upholsterer who specialised in the crafting and construction of hand made fine furniture. A true Artisan, he longed to create his own furniture in the traditional European style he had been trained in.
His time came, starting from humble beginnings. First he started to make chairs in a spare room at his brother's house in Brunswick. Soon he moved to his own factory in North Coburg. His new wife Francesca started to work with him as a seamstress, as well as a mother to their two children.

Sulfaro is the home of fine furniture here in Melbourne. All Sulfaro Upholstered Furniture is hand made right here in Melbourne by our master craftsmen and artisans to exacting standards using traditional European methodologies. The results are unique, hand crafted, elegant and stylish lounge suites, sofas and armchairs, dining settings and occasional chairs of the highest quality.
At Sulfaro we offer a full in-house design service for clients requiring assistance in choosing and developing their interior design. The Sulfaro team can assist you in choosing the furniture that best suits your needs. Equally we can assist in selecting the Lounge Suites, Sofas, Armchairs and accessories that fulfil both your desires and work best with your floor plan.
For many people there is often the question as to whether a favourite sofa or lounge suite can be restored. Often the original springs have lost tension, the webbing has stretched and the fabric is either worn, stained or both. The timber framing can be damaged or attacked by insects. Sulfaro Furniture's craftsmen are experienced and have real expertise in determining whether a piece of furniture is worthy of saving.
Leather is virtually maintenance free, provided that it is cared for properly. If you follow these simple instructions, your leather furniture should last a very long time. If you need to clean your leather, Sulfaro Furniture can supply a quality leather cleaning product that will meet all your maintenance needs.
Much of the furniture currently on sale in Australia is imported. Low end quality upholstered furniture is shipped in from various Asian and third world locations. High end quality furniture is imported from Europe - Italy, Germany, Scandinavia and elsewhere, with import and transportation costs greatly adding to retail prices.

We purchased a lounge suite from Sulfaro back in 1996. Fast forward to 2019, the suite was structurally as good as the day we bought it! Wanting a update however, we did shop around and found plenty of cheap, nice looking imports, but found nothing that could compare to the quality and workmanship of the Sulfaro range of furniture. Santo, Amelia, and their interior designer Shirley, provided superb customer service and advice.
