Considering in a mall not a bad pub great value lunch meals hearty burgers good pizzas and nachos was well proportioned with guacamole and sour cream. Could have got a four star but on Tuesday we asked for music to be turned down as too loud outside tables and it was a team biz lunch and hard to hear each other speak. Our request was ignored. We had same experience on another visit. Sad as could have been a good regular team venue.

Very disappointing. This used to be an ok place to drop in after work. The food was ok, the drinks had an ok price and there was football on the TV. These things allowed you to ignore that it is highly contrived, corporate feeling wannabe english pub.
Unfortunately the food is no longer ok, and the price of drinks is ridiculous.
There are lots of other places to go in this area, choose one of them.

This is about the food I had only, as no other aspect I want to comment on.
I ordered the Chicken and Mushroom Pie with Chips.
Just a FYI first off: I like combinations of meat and Mushrooms, so I was looking forward to theirs.
Alas it seems they must consider 'slops' a normal staple, okay maybe too harsh?
Basically they delivered chunky soup in a square pot, with a layer of pastry on top.
Far from what anyone would call a pie!
I can buy better meat and Mushroom pies frozen from the Supermarket (Herbert Adams).
The chip were better than average and helped sop up the soup :(

I must admit I've ventured into Melbourne Central Lion Hotel many times since it opened. Whilst I'm personally not a big fan British Themed pubs, I can see their place within the community, and let's face it they do bloody well.
On Monday I was meeting a business associate for a meeting and we needed somewhere quiet, so I picked Melbourne Central Lion.
One thing that has always impressed me with this venue is how clean it is. For the amount of people that frequent this place, it always looks fresh and clean and doesn't have that stale beer smell that other themed bars overtime

I have frequented this place a number of times and I keep coming back. I wouldn't say it is the best place in Melbourne but it all depends on what you are looking for. It is a good traditional pub with traditional wooden features. Has sport on tv if that's what your looking for. The Chicken Parma's are massive and delicious, well worth the money. It gets lively on a Saturday night with a band and a DJ. But my favourite thing about the place is that it has a Latin night on a Thursday night! Great Latin music, lots of Latin people, reminds me of my favourite songs from back home.

Pricy, odd and uninspiring for me. The Lion charges like a wounded bull, and I dislike that a lot. I don;t think a $6 for a pot is fair value anywhere, especially not a a bland slightly confusing venue. Staff slightly surly when I called in on Wednesday this week and used it as a meeting place before dinner.
The fit-out, music and clientele seemed an odd juxtaposition to me. As one of my friends said, at 28 I'm probably 10 too old to be here, or 20 years too young. I had better venues at 18, and hope I don't find myself here at 48.
The food is perfectly acceptable, or at least it

I've only been here when I'm feeling like a quick beer in the area with minimal dress effort on my part... Other than that when I've been too many beers into the night.
It's obvious to see I'm not that keen, and really the convenience of this place is all that counts.
To be honest it's kind of smelly, pretty drab and dark (and I normally like dark), and the beers could be cheaper than what you're paying.

I lived in Melbourne for a year and this was one of my go-to places. Prices were not bad for Melbourne... There was usually a special on one type of food or another. I usually frequented the pasta specials. Simple, filling, and usually around $10-13. Nothing you'll miss once you leave, but good enough to bring you back when you're in the area.
The bar staff was usually foreign, which was OK for me since I was an American interloper myself. Actually if you're familiar with the north end of Melbourne's CBD, then you're aware that there are far more non-Australians than

Not all that really distinguishable from similar pubs of
It's kind. It's the sort of cheap and cheerful basic style
pub, with all the usual suspects in terms of food and beers.
Quite boring and un-impressive really. It's the sort of place
that attracts the lowest common denominator, i was about
to say bohemian uni student youth, but this place is probably
too posh for them.
in short, its full of beer swilling bogans, some uni students, backpackers,
sports and cards fans,Poker too, and generally a breeding ground for the
lesser and more unappealing elements of society. Oh dear

It's quite a strange little pub the Melbourne Central Lion Hotel. Located on Level 3 of Melbourne Central it is very dark and dingy and unfortunately does not have the same views of the city that other bars nearby offer.
Being an Englishmen, I'm not really sure what is English about it. Possibly it is the same decor as a 1980s run down grotty English pub. It actually has a beer garden that is rather too shady for my liking (being inside a shopping centre once again).
Besides these little foibles, it does have pool tables, friendly staff and reasonably priced drinks. I used to come

The exterior of this hotel makes it so inviting to come here with a group of mates who drink tap beer, and lots of it as well. Especially after they have had a great time at the ten pin bowling alley next door. Great snacks to enjoy with your alcohol, and a great establishment to hang out on a Thursday or a Friday night, and especially after ten pin bowling after these times as well. And also great to have a quick drink before heading to the movies. If the latter is the case, then their lemon, lime and bitters is worth having a go so you don't fall asleep on the bean bags (I go up to Hoyts

Okay, I know the Melbourne Lion is an English style pub, but the whole thing feels very American to me, reason being that it is a pub inside a shopping centre, or 'mall', a thing that is quite common in the U.S.
Sure plenty of shopping centres here have pubs/bars/ restaurants attached, but ther are usually attached onto the outside of the building, rather than on an inner level with no outdoor space to speak of.
No outdoor space, you say! But its actually not that noticeable once you are in the bar, though I dont smoke so perhaps that makes a difference.
Anyway, its just your average

Friend of mine loves the Lion (and, for some reason, doesn't object to bars in the middle of shopping centres), so I've been there a bit. He's a bit fussy, actually, mostly only goes places where they've cider on tap.
While the whole shopping centre thing still gives me the shudders, it's a good enough pub. If you feel like eating, the buffalo wings are fairly tasty (if a little expensive). Only objection I could raise is that they're a bit too fond of old-timey stools; they look pretty but they're not particularly comfortable.
Also, if you're in Melbourne

If you're after great views and fresh air then I suggest you cross the street and find another bar, because the MC Lion is tucked away inside the Melbourne Central shopping complex next to Hoyts Cinemas - although they do have a bizarre 'Beer Garden'.
The Lion is the perfect destination for a pre-movie dinner (or lunch), as they have some fantastic meal deals throughout the week including a $9 steak special... Probably the cheapest steak night in Melbourne?
