Are You Trying to Find Supportive Strategies for Your Child Diagnosed with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)?. Working with a dietitian that specialises in supporting children diagnosed with ASD/ADHD could be the answer you've been looking for. Perhaps you're worried about your child's limited diet and are concerned they may be missing out on key nutrients to support their growth and development.

Nutrition is one of the pillars of childhood wellness but, in my opinion, it is often forgotten in the treatment and management of children who have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) be it High Functioning Autism, Asperger's or Pervasive Developmental Disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS) or Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Individualised dietary advice is vital to support many of the ASD symptoms and behaviours. ASD is a complex condition. Nutrition can be a powerful tool to assist in the management of ASD. There is not a "one diet fits all" approach and dietary modifications need to be done properly to ensure the diet remains balanced and that the child gains the benefits of the intervention.
I am a Canberra/Queanbeyan Dietitian who specialises in working with children with ADHD and those on the Autism Spectrum. I graduated from the University of Sydney in 1995 with a Masters in Nutrition & Dietetics. I am a member of the Dietetics Association of Australia (DAA). I am committed to education and professional development as part of our accreditation.
Children on the Autism Spectrum have very complex eating issues. Their condition makes their dietary treatment more intricate. It is beneficial that parents work with a specialist in this area to gain improvements in the overall heath of the child and to ensure the diet is balanced. Food: Children on the Autism Spectrum are notoriously difficult to feed despite the parent's best efforts.
It takes the correct balance of nutrients for children's brains to function at their best. All of the parents I work with want to make the best food choices for your children. All parents want their children to thrive in their growth, development and learning.

However, it is difficult to interpret all the nutritional information that is out there, especially if your child has been diagnosed with ADD or ADHD and you are balancing so many additional needs. If we begin to think about food, we know children's diets' have changed dramatically since the 1970's with the advent of food processing.
Parents are so busy being parents that they often put their own health issues on hold and totally focus on the needs of their children. Don't forget- your health is important too! The healthier you are the easier it is to parent. Adult mental health and nutrition is an area of great interest to me.
