Services
Nestled on the shores of Macquarie Harbour, Strahan was originally developed as a port of access for the mining settlements on the West Coast of Tasmania. Strahan became a vital location for the timber industry that existed around the Gordon River & Macquarie Harbour, particularly the harvesting of one of the world's rarest timbers Huon Pine - known as Lagarostrobos franklinii.
Below is the history surrounding our stately home Ormiston House. We are lucky to have copies of many early photographs that bring much of this home to life today; please enjoy. They had 10 children by the time of emigration to Australia, the youngest of which was Frederick Ormiston Henry. Below is John Henderson Henry's house in Lerwick UK, at the right with the railing.
The Ormiston House Book was first published by Mike Fry in early 1999 with most of the research being done in 1998. A house can be many things to many people. As well as the bricks and mortar, which are the material fabric of the structure, the house inherits the experiences from within and absorbs them.
At our Strahan accommodation your room facilities include heating and cooling, remote colour TV, tea and coffee making facilities & wireless internet. The house is a treasure trove of old world charm and you can experience it in many ways, the lounge/Port O Call bar is an excellent area to unwind and mingle with fellow house guests.
Harry Grining and his brother took their first paying passengers into the Gordon River more than 100 years ago. Today five generations on, the Grinings' continue their century-old family tradition, adding a wealth of local knowledge to the mystery and serenity of this special place. This wilderness experience will take you along the Gordon River, Macquarie Harbour, Hells Gates and Sarah Island.

My wife and I stayed at Ormiston House with four American friends. They were all delighted with the accommodation in a charming house rather than a Hotel. Terry made us very welcome and the evening meal was outstanding. The rooms were very comfortable and the house was well situated near major attractions.

A great old house, lovingly restored by hosts Caroline and Mike. The rooms are very nice and comfortable - not tacky like the photos on the website suggest. Caroline baked us muffins on arrival and provided a snack for the road when we left. Free WiFi, a guest bar, collection of DVDs and board games, a room with history of the house and families, tower with a view at the top, what more could you want?
