My name's Carly. I graduated from The University of Newcastle in 2011 and have worked extensively with adults and aged care patients ever since. Videofluoroscopy Swallow Studies (VFSS) also known as Modified Barium Swallow (MBS) is an examination of swallowing done under x-ray. A patient will be asked to eat and/or drink something while the speech pathologist views the oral and pharyngeal phase of swallowing. It is one of our gold standard assessment tools as it gives us a dynamic direct view of the structures used in swallowing.
Hastings Macleay Speech Pathology works closely with older people in Residential Aged Care Facilities (RACF). As many people age, they experience changes to their swallowing and communication. Please see other fact sheets for information about swallowing and communication more specifically. It is important to request an assessment by a speech pathologist when a resident demonstrates difficulty with eating or drinking.
Parkinson's disease has been estimated to effect approximately 212,000 people nationally. One of the functions it can impact is someone's voice and ability to be heard. However, it doesn't have to impact you. There are treatment options available which are highly evidence based and have been proven to work.
Swallowing is a complex process. Some 50 pairs of muscles and many nerves work to receive food into the mouth, prepare it, and move it from the mouth to the stomach. This happens in three stages. Speech Pathologists work with the first two phases, and sometimes assist Gastroenterologists with diagnosis in the third phase, the oesophageal phase.
