Sugar City Marine was founded by Ray Leigh and Warren Gray, both very accomplished entrepreneurs and marine mechanics that started out as apprentices and were promoted to manager and workshop foreman at Fields Marine Pty Ltd, which Leigh and Gray bought out to start their own business.

Its operations began in 1986, one year before the company moved to its current location on 11 Victoria Street, Mackay - a prime spot boasting a spacious block on the main street, front and side access, a secure parking area for boats and a very convenient distance from a boat ramp.
