Taekwondo, the art of self defence originated in Korea over 2000 years ago. It was then known as 'Tae Kyon' a form of foot fighting. Throughout the centuries hand techniques were introduced. Brett Kelly (pictured right) found traditional Taekwondo to be very effective, but, with his knowledge of boxing and science believed that it could be improved upon.
Thus, South East Australian Taekwondo was born. S.E.A.T Taekwondo is the modernised form which is more effective and more relevant to todays society. Over the centuries Taekwondo has evolved into not only one of the most effective forms of self defence but also an exciting sport and a way of maintaining physical fitness.

The physical discipline needed builds perseverance and self control, whilst promoting good character. South East Australian Tae Kwon-Do is an independent organisation which was founded in 1979 and has training clubs all over Victoria and New South Wales. Part of the martial arts tradition is that belts should not be washed. A student would start with a white belt and over the months and years of hard training the belt would change colour eventually ending a black colour. The belt colour system is a symbol of your learned knowledge of Taekwondo. South East Australian Taekwondo adheres to strict grading guidelines.
South East Australian Taekwondo patterns (Katas) are unique to our style. They have evolved since 1979 and been developed very much as a technical progression through the grades and with practical self-defence in mind. Patterns form only one part of South East Australian Taekwondo. However, they are still essential to the style as they assist in learning, maintaining and practicing techniques.
The seven Tennets of South East Australian Taekwondo are just as important as all other areas of our training. A student may only progress through the grades (belts) if they show an achievement towards these Tenets as the other areas of training. To demonstrate respect towards all Martial Arts. It is being faithful to your family, country, school, friends or ideals, when the going gets tough as well as when things are good.
