Charles Nicholas was the first hairdresser to offer hair extensions and dreadlocks in Newcastle. After commencing trade in 1981, we soon became hair extension specialists and importers of quality hair into Australia. This coincided with an explosion in the popularity of dreadlocks, for which we developed our own techniques necessary to suit people of all hair types.

In the 90s, Redken and De Lorenzo hair products were introduced to the salon, since then we have extended our range to include De Lorenzo, Evy Professional, Bio Ionic, Dread It, Murray's Pomade, Manic Panic and Arctic Fox.

I've been a Charles Nic fan for nearly a decade now and have never found another salon that even comes close. I lived in Wollongong for years, and now Sydney, and still drive back every 5 weeks to Newcastle to see my fav hair mechanic, Sonya. I have super short and fine hair, and no one can make it sit and look as good as she can. Super friendly and genuine guys. I recommend this place to everyone who comments on my noggin. I recommend it even if they don't!

I have been going to Charles Nicholas since I was 16 years old (almost a decade!) and I have not fallen out of love with this salon! There is a reason why this salon has been around since '81 and continues to set the standard for this region. Sonya is incredible. I have had extensions put in (both curly and straight, blonde and black!) and recently had the "Botox For Hair" treatment. After the treatment, my hair is the healthiest it has EVER been and is long and luscious. Everyone is commenting on it! I would not trust anyone else and I feel totally at ease at Charles Nicholas, knowing I am getting

I had the Bio Ionic straightening done at Charles Nicholas. Love it- no longer have to worry about organising my hair for awhile as the first time I did it, it lasted for almost a year! This by far is the best hair straightening experience I’ve had, would definitely recommend it to everyone. Plus with the great environment at the salon and friendly staffs, what more could one ask for? Thanks Sonya & Ian!

Today I spent approx 8 hours in the salon. I had such an amazing experience! Being my first time there I was worried i'd be uncomfortable or how my hair would turn out. I was blown away! They are all incredible people and I had a great time! Before my appointment my hair was disgusting, dead, thin and just all around bad. My hair came out better than expected and they even helped me with a uni assignment!! I am definitely a customer that will go back time and time again. Thank you for everything today, all of you.

I got Dreadlocks done at Charles Nicholas in January. I was recommended by 2 'mainstream' hair dressers that Charles Nicholas is the place to go for dreads. The service was AMAZING, there were no dumb questions, they were very gentle and nothing was too hard! My dreads look awesome (in my opinion) and I can't speak highly enough about them! I Highly recommend that anyone thinking of getting dreadlocks needs to go and speak to Sonia and the team! They won't steer you wrong.

I have been going to see Sonya and the team for over five years now, and they are by far the best salon I have ever been to! Whenever I had been to another salon, I would always seem to leave not totally satisfied with the result, but these guys have the skills and vision to get the best out your hair and give you exactly what you ask for.
Even after moving out of town, I will still make the trek in there rather than go to someplace else - it's worth it.
They also offer student discounts!

What I look for in a hair stylist is honesty, along with talent and a keen eye to foresee what is going to look good on a particular person. That is why I continue to go back to Sonya and why I have been her client for many years. She truly is talented at her craft and I never have to worry about how my hair is going to turn out.
