Central Australian Womens Legal Service
Central Australian Women's Legal Service (CAWLS) delivers a holistic, culturally safe, trauma informed legal service for women. Our team can help with information about legal issues, legal advice and representation, referral to support services, community legal education and law reform advocacy.

Special concern is extended to women who are affected by domestic violence, living in remote communities or unable to afford access to other legal services. If you would like to talk to a lawyer contact us to make an appointment or call us on Free Call 1800 684 055.
Services
CAWLS was born out of necessity. In the early 1990s a group of dedicated women legal practitioners began providing free legal advice to women in need. Mostly these women were victims of domestic violence who had no other access to legal advice. Over time, it became obvious that women in Central Australia required a full time legal service.
In 2014, we will be travelling regularly to Ti Tree, Ltyentye Apurte (Santa Teresa) and Tennant Creek. In Tennant Creek, we are located at the Northern Territory Legal Aid Commission offices at 168 Patterson Street (next to Top in Town). We are available for advice appointments and to assist women with domestic violence matters at Court (Wednesday mornings).
CAWLS runs a drop-in service for legal advice in relation to domestic violence matters. Women seeking advice about domestic violence can call or visit the office any time from 8.30am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday and speak to a lawyer. CAWLS provides a duty service at the Alice Springs and Tennant Creek Local Courts to assist women with domestic violence matters.
CAWLS conducts regular Community Legal Education sessions for community members, stakeholders and professionals on topics including domestic and family violence, child protection, victims of crime compensation, and family law. We believe that there is scope for legal matters to be mitigated or even prevented through empowering women with knowledge.
CAWLS is actively involved in law reform with a focus on issues affecting women in the Northern Territory. We do this by contributing to parliamentary and law reform enquiries, participating in representative bodies, meeting with politicians and government representatives and making statements to the media.
