Samuel Kwok Wing Chun Australia
Wing Chun is a very unique and scientific form of martial arts. Wing Chun is a style of Kung Fu that originates from China, the martial art was later refined in Hong Kong by the late Ip Man. Wing Chun's specialty is in close contact combat, using quick punches and kicks with a tight defence, coordinated through agile stances and footwork for a quick advance.

The effectiveness of this fighting style is achieved by well coordinated attacks with simultaneous defence and vise versa. Due to its effectiveness this martial art makes for an effective form of self defence. The student must learn to deliver the correct amount of energy or force, whilst staying relaxed when possible.

We will explore and rate some of the ways Wing Chun Kung Fu has been portrayed in the cinema. It's worth mentioning that films like Ip Man have been instrumental in spreading Wing Chun over recent years. The below graph represents the popularity of the search team Ip Man in search engine Google. As you can see the two giant spikes and subsequent rises in popularity coincide with the releases of the Ip Man and Ip Man 2 films.
This guide covers some tips to help get the most out of a trip to Hong Kong from a Wing Chun perspective. We cover training options, places to visit and the basics of traveling around the city. I first visited Hong Kong and China in 2007 and then went back again in 2010. There is a photo album from the 2007 Hong Kong & China trip here.
You will often see people referring to the late grandmaster of Wing Chun as both Yip Man and Ip Man, people even argue bitterly over the name. So which spelling is right? Ip Man is the official western spelling of the late grandmaster of Wing Chun and (teacher of Bruce Lee). Why is Ip correct and not Yip?
Part of the legacy Ip Man left behind was the set of chops he commissioned Moy Yat (artist and student to Ip Man) to carve. These chops are usually refereed to as the Kuen Kuit. The 51 chops consist of different kinds of stone carved in different styles. It is said to have taken Moy Yat 3 years to collect the stones and an additional 3 years to plan and carve them.
If you were a Wing Chun practitioner and I said the words, "what is Fat Shan famous for", you would probable say, "Ip Man or Wing Chun". But to the local people of Fat Shan City in China, it is just as famous for its Pottery, Clothing and Metal Industry as its Martial Arts heritage. Many famous martial artist of southern China are from Fat Shan, including, naming but a few.
