Susan is the owner and Principal Dentist of Point Cook Dental Group. She graduated from The University of Otago. Over the years she has developed a wide range of experiences, having worked in Bendigo and Swan Hill.
Calculus (also known as tartar) is hardened plaque that has been left on the tooth for a while and cannot be brushed away by the toothbrush. Accumulation of calculus can lead to gum disease which can cause tooth loss. Therefore, it is imperative to visit your dentist or hygienist to have a professional clean regularly (usually 6-monthly) to prevent the progression of gum disease.
It is important to look after your child's teeth from the moment they start teething. Keeping your child's teeth and gums clean will protect against infection, cavities and pain. Decayed baby teeth can damage the permanent teeth underneath. To develop strong teeth, make sure your child eats a healthy, balanced diet and avoids foods with a lot of added sugar, such as lollies, biscuits and soft drinks.
A filling is used to restore a tooth that is affected by decay, fractures, cracks and wear. The decayed or affected portion of the tooth will be removed using a drill and then filled with a material. Depending on the depth of decay, local anaesthetic may sometimes be used to anaesthetise the tooth during the filling process so that it will not be sensitive.
As part of our philosophy to create a great smile for you to enjoy the finer things in life, we also offer services for tooth whitening. Tooth discolouration can be caused by consumption of coffee, tea, and smoking and this discolouration can be easily removed. Our dentist will first conduct a thorough dental examination to ensure both your teeth and gum tissues are healthy before commencing tooth whitening treatment.
