We enrolled our son (6 years old ) for a one year membership in the Australian Academy of Gracie Jiu Jitsu and Self Defence. Perhaps we were misled by the loud name "academy". In fact, it turned out to be an empty phrase. Allegedly, "Professor" Paulo Tavares is an unbalanced individual, unable to provide clear instructions screaming at the children in the classes. Not safe for students: In the classroom, there is not even an elementary first-aid kit in case of bruises and injuries that may occur in contact sports. There is no aspect of respect and discipline between students.
We feel very disappointed

Be warned, this gym does not allow outsiders or any other experienced Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioners from outside of that gym to train there. That's a big red flag for a number of different reasons. They don't want you to enter any local competitions either. Closed minded and isolationist. Your training will suffer negatively as a result of this. Possibly a McDojo.

I took my first trial class almost a year ago and I've been hooked since. Paulo is an excellent instructor, and the club has a great vibe built on mutual courtesy, an eagerness to learn among students, and of course Paulo's deep knowledge of BJJ. I've trained in other martial arts in the past, and my experience tells me that this is the real deal. Classes are intense, challenging, and rewarding.

Thank you Paulo for setting up your school- Jiu Jitsu has been fantastic for both my seven year old son and I. I really appreciate the attention to detail, the graded progression from complete novice, and the emphasis on safety, precision, and respect for all members of the school. We have felt safe and welcomed every moment we've been at the Academy, and would highly recommend to anyone interested.

I brought my daughter here towards the end of last year. Since then she has grown so much confidence in herself and become more confident in everyday activities at school and home. She is still her self but with a conference that I love seeing in my daughter.
The environment is welcoming and respect is shown at the highest level at all time.
I would recommend Gracie to anyone who is looking for a place to train but not sure where to go.
Thanks Paulo and thanks to all the trainers there as well.

I am coming to the end of my free trail period. Having had hardly no training in martial arts previously, I believe I have found the place I was looking for. The expirence guys at the academy are very humble and show great patience with the less expirenced students. Paulo the instructor is both passionate and professional. He has taken time outside the lessons to explain to me the history of both Gracie Jiu Jitsu and the Perth academy. I would highly recommend this place after my first week expirence.
