Professional Photographer Melbourne Scott Morton, has been taking photographs for over 30 years. Coming from a background of graphic design and commercial photographics, Scott was asked (around ten years ago) by a friend that was getting married, to be her photographer. From this moment, Scott has found inspiration and creative freedom in the emotive and expressive nature of weddings and the art of shooting people.

People often tell me that shooting in overcast conditions is best for portraits. In many ways this is true. Yes, we get 'flattering' soft light, as the sky acts as a giant soft box, removing the directional and harsh 'spotlight' of the sun. The sun's direct light creates harsh shadow, amplifies skin texture / imperfections and often creates way too much contrast, for a digital camera to capture nicely.
I thought that I'd write an article on ways to get around winter weddings in relation to photography and the early exit of useable daylight. In the winter time, the light can fail us before 5pm in the afternoon, especially if the weather is inclement or overcast, so how do we plan our wedding day to get the best of the day's light?
Weddings are an extension of your love and commitment to each other and your families. We all like to think that we can relax and enjoy one of the most important days of our lives. Apparently, this is not as simple as it may at first appear. The biggest impact on the potential enjoyment of our wedding day is time (or the lack of it) and stress.
I felt compelled to relay this story to all of you couples out there, on how not to organise your wedding. Recently, I shot a couple where a whole bunch of mishaps occurred, that could have completely been avoided. It is so important to make sure that your i"s are dotted and your t"s are crossed in the organisation of such an important day and particularly when time is critical and key.
