We all possess a unique set of personality traits that make us who we are. These are the usual ways we perceive, think, feel, behave and relate to others, and they tend to be consistent across time and situations. Personality traits can become "disordered" when they're extreme and/or inflexible, making it difficult for the person to adjust to their environment.
Medicare pays a rebate for up to 20 visits with a psychologist in a calendar year. The rebate is $126.50 per consultation. Your GP will be able to determine your eligibility for the scheme. If you are assessed as eligible your GP will provide you with a Mental Health Care Plan that needs to be brought to your initial appointment.
While human beings have always known about the mental health effects of trauma, it was only in 1980 that the term post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, was coined. This acceptance spawned an explosion of research on the causes, vulnerabilities, and optimum treatments for PTSD. We have since learnt a great deal about how to help people with this disabling and often chronic condition.
