Sutherland Shire Psychology
Seeing a clinical psychologist for the first time can be anxiety provoking for many people. Knowing this, Sutherland Shire Psychology aims to provide a relaxed and warm environment for its clients, so you feel comfortable enough to be able to express, in your own time, what you would like help with.

We create a collaborative atmosphere in sessions so that clients and therapist can work together to establish and maintain the best treatment approach, given the clients preferences and the therapists knowledge of what research has found to be most effective. We provide support to individuals, couple and families.
Services
I always knew I wanted to work as a therapist. I have a passion for treating trauma patients effectively, which is rare because most trauma therapy in Australia is based on archaic and dangerous models. Many patients walk away with more damage than they had in the first place as a result. I opened Sutherland Shire Psychology late 2009 after spending years working as a clinician.
We all feel anxious sometimes and anxiety is a healthy, normal human emotion. Anxiety is our alarm system and keeps us alert for dangers that may be around us. However, this "alarm system" can sometimes become out of control and many people start to feel anxious or nervous for no real good reason.
Depression involves a period of feeling down, sad, teary or "blue", or a period where the person feels less interested in the things that usually enjoy. It is different to the normal low mood that most of us will experience for a day or two here and there, in that it persists for at least 2 weeks and begins to interfere in the person's life, relationships and general functioning.
The overuse and/or misuse of alcohol and other drugs is common and causes many difficulties for sufferers and their families. Many people have a concept in their head that someone with a substance-use disorder is homeless, out of work and drinks/drugs all day and night. This is not so.

The majority of clients seeking help for alcohol and/or other drugs are people who go to work everyday and have mortgages or rental commitments, but recognise that their drinking or drug use is becoming out of their control and causing difficulties in their relationships or performance at work or school.
Lifestyle Management work involves the client and therapist working together to define and attend to goals that the client feels would enhance their quality of life and wellbeing. They are not necessarily suffering from a disorder or condition, but recognise that some areas of their life are not where they would like them to be.
