Tarraleah
Tarraleah is a beautiful historic estate in the heart of Tasmania's Central Highlands. Our stunning wilderness backdrop and wide range of quality accommodation options provide a perfect spot for a holiday, romantic getaway, group get together or corporate retreat. Located on the Lyell Highway two hours' drive northwest of Hobart, we are an ideal place to stay on your journey along the west coast to Lake St Clair, Strahan, and Cradle Mountain.

Tarraleah was home to the workers (and their families) responsible for developing Tasmania's pioneering Hydroelectric scheme. During your stay, you will discover its unexpected stories and beautiful architecture. Visit our beautiful Scottish Highland Cows, walk our wilderness trails, take a kayaking, mountain bike, or fly-fishing tour and then settling in for a whisky tasting from our collection of 150 single malt whisky's.
Services
Tarraleah's Cottages were hand built by Tasmanian craftsmen in the 1930's and have now been fully restored and furnished to retain their Art Deco Style. Each of our 15 cottages are self-contained, featuring full kitchens, dining spaces, lounge rooms with fireplaces, a laundry, sunroom and 2 bathrooms.
Perched on the edge of the escarpment with views of the Nive Valley and stretching back to Hobart this house is very modern in design while retaining highland warmth. A great house for a family get together, you can enjoy the social aspect of the open plan living spaces or escape to the balcony and simply enjoy the view.
Tarraleah's schoolhouse has been stylishly converted into relaxed and contemporary accommodation. The school rooms are ensuite studio rooms, most with a queen size bed and bathroom on the ground floor, tea and coffee making facilities, a sitting area with flat screen TV and DVD player upstairs.

Tucked into the large shared kitchen at the heart of the Scholars building is a warm fireside snug, dining room, guest laundry, rocking horse, lots of space and a little nostalgia.Interconnecting rooms and family suites are available (on request and subject to availability) and there is easy parking outside.
Our 2 large Lakeside Cabins offer a picturesque position at the edge of the village with an outlook of the lake, often a stones throw from our herd of Highland Cows. They feature a large equipped kitchen, a separate lounge room, a bedroom with a queen bed and a separate bathroom. Our 6 Highlander cabins are smaller, but equally comfortable, consisting of a kitchenette, a bedroom with queen sized bed and ensuite bathroom.
Touring Tasmania with a caravan or motorhome? Tarraleah is the perfect spot to stop on your Western Wilds Journey. Perfectly located along your drive towards Lake St Clair, Strahan and Cradle Mountain, Tarraleah is a quiet, clean and serene place to stop and catch your breath for a while. The park features clean, modern facilities and 15 spacious powered sites.

What a wonderful little place to stay. The cottages are beautifully presented and provided lots of space. We stayed in winter so the fireplace was well used. Reminded us a bit of the movie Pleasantville. Would gladly stay here again.

We visit Tarraleah every year as a big family group. We love the place as do all the kids. Such a special little town where we go ‘to live’ for a few days each with our own Self contained beautiful houses, we settle in and cook our own meals. Kids ride their bikes, pat the cows and see the ducks. They can’t wait for the annual trip! We even find time for a round of golf!

Interesting place to stay although a little hard to find after dark. Cottages were spacious with spectacular views out the back over the hills.
Satchet coffee was a minor detraction

Very large and comfy cottages. Keeping them authentic including furniture while making them very comfortable is brilliant. The cottages definitely have a soul. No reception, no cafeteria makes you feel quite isolated. Bring everything with you

Stunning place, lots of accommodation options and helpful engaging staff even after hours. As this was a very last minute decision due to some bad navigation and horrible weather and ended up being a very pleasant surprise.
The Highland cabins were clean and allow for self-sufficient staying with a small kitchenette.
The bed was a little hard and made a bit of noise when rolling over, but for the price was reasonable.

A truly secluded village with a great 1930s aesthetic, friendly service in the restaurant and from reception staff. Loads of outdoor activities in the area - lovely rainforest scenery. Cottages are spacious and very well heated, nice decor, although some of the couches are not super comfortable. Plenty of living areas, effective wood-heating and electric heating too. Dishwasher and fully equipped kitchen. Very peaceful!

Lovely town to call past. Called into the local cafe and while it's got some lovely offerings the coffee is pretty average to say the least!
Good accommodation available, golf course plenty of trout fishing in the area. Good bushwalking and plenty of camping at the surrounding lakes.

I stayed overnight during a friend's forest wedding. I loved the art deco style furnishings. I had delicious vegan meals at the reception, the rest of the food looked great as well. We did the walk to Tarraleah Falls and visited the highland cows. Great place :-)
