To be "on Country" means more than to be standing on a particular patch of earth, within a particular political division. For Indigenous people, Country is more than land, sea and sky; it is also the holistic systems of nature that dynamically work together and the associated cultural and spiritual customs, rituals and responsibilities that carry on its knowledge and ethics.
We understand that every project we undertake in Australia is on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Lands. Through co-creation with Traditional Custodians, we are committed where possible and appropriate, to embed the built environment with Indigenous knowledges and customs by making tangible the living histories, contemporary cultural practices, narratives and values of place.
Our Indigenous Advisory Architecture and Design (IAAD) team leads and guides our practice on all Indigenous initiatives. Sarah Lynn Rees (Palawa) provides both internal guidance and external advisory services alongside her architectural role. Sarah is a Palawa woman descending from the Plangermaireener and Trawlwoolway people of North East Tasmania.
JCB and the Monash University Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture are partnering to develop what is currently called the Protocols Project.
The Monash University Department of Architecture and JCB will remap Indigenous protocols to the various stages of built environment processes by engaging with Indigenous communities, the Indigenous and non-Indigenous design community, and continuing to learn from fields outside of our own such as existing frameworks, charters and guidelines.
