Somewhere amongst all the billboards and glossy magazine advertising of cosmetic dentistry and photo shop style smiles, the true caring voice of dentistry has been lost. As medicine has given way to cosmetic surgery procedures, so too has dentistry and the messages we are being bombarded with on a daily basis reflect this.
Do you have pain or a problem with your teeth or gums? Are you worried about something you can feel in your mouth? Perhaps you or your child is grinding or it might be that you aren't happy with a missing tooth or the colour of your teeth? We answer all those burning questions you may have and if you think of something we haven't covered just 'ask Jamie'.
This condition, that is caused by the herpes simplex virus, is most often seen in children and young adults. It is highly contagious for about 7 days and will be present in saliva and all other secretions- so be extra careful during this period. Often you will feel unwell, with a temperature and swollen glands.
In order to understand what an oro-antral communication is, we need to first explain a couple of terms. An oro-antral communication is a potential complication of an upper molar extraction. If you have particularly large roots on your upper molar teeth, they can sometimes extend beyond the jawbone into the sinus.
Gums that are affected are bright red in colour and really sore to touch, often to sore to brush. There is ulceration and breakdown of the interdental papillae (the bit of gum in-between your teeth). A powerful bad smell comes with the condition- this is due to the fermentation of the bacteria. Your glands will frequently be up, as you fight the infection, but it is rare that you will have a temperature.
