The goal is to help individuals challenge their patterns and beliefs and replace "errors in thinking such as overgeneralizing, magnifying negatives, minimizing positives and catastrophizing" with "more realistic and effective thoughts. This decreases emotional distress and self-defeating behaviour.
A referral is not required to see a psychologist, however, substantial rebates are available if you are referred by your GP or psychiatrist with a Mental Health Care Plan. Access to psychological services has become easier with the establishment of Medicare rebates.

You will however, need a referral from your GP or Psychiatrist to access psychological therapies under the Medicare scheme (this may entitle you to a rebate up to $126.50 per session).You are welcome to access services without a doctors referral and you may be entitled to a rebate from your Private Health Fund.
