An original KI settlers home, this gorgeous historic stone cottage is over 100 years old, sitting high on the hill keeping watch over beautiful Hog's Bay. Magnificent ocean views, attention to detail and wallabies at the doorstep in close proximity to the well serviced township of Penneshaw are all features that will make your holiday at Charlie's one to remember for all the right reasons.

The cottage has been lovingly restored and refurbished offering attractive, clean, well appointed facilities to the astute traveller looking for quality accommodation. A recent extension consisting of a modern fully equipped kitchen, dining area with ocean views, laundry, spacious heated bathroom with separate shower and clawfoot bath have made this unique piece of history a fantastic choice for your visit to Kangaroo Island.
Services
Charlie Bates Cottage is a very comfortable and unique stay. The cottage is very comfortable and spoiling in spite of its age. The kitchen has all you may need, the bathroom is wide and the towels and linen clean and fresh. We loved the fact that the owners kept the touch of history in the house (the historic correspondence on the kitchen cupboard and the photos and pieces in the living room).
A picture book seaside village, Penneshaw is the ideal location for your stay on Kangaroo Island. Superb swimming beaches, stunning scenery, fantastic fishing, abundant wildlife and a well serviced town centre are just some of the attractions Penneshaw has to offer.

Just at the end of the road from Charlie's, Hog's Bay Beach is a great place to swim, see dolphins or the occasional seal at play and has excellent grassed BBQ facilities located near the Penguin Information Centre and ferry terminal. The centre is open nightly for tours featuring Penneshaw's cutest residents, the Little Fairy Penguins.

It's a wonderful place that need alot off work to get it back up to what you see in the online advertising I didn't stay there I was asked to clean as is I wouldn't pay any more then 75 a night but in saying that the place is very old and once it's had a bit of $$ spent on h e r she would be worth the stay

Took our money and never responded. Didn't even honour their own cancellation terms.
We booked Charlie Bates Cottage for two nights in Jan 2021 and paid in full upfront. Unfortunately, we couldn't travel due to COVID-19 restrictions that prevented NSW residents from entering SA.
After hoping the borders would re-open in time (and soon realising they wouldn't) we alerted Charlie Bates of our wish to receive credit for our accommodation as we were forced to cancel our trip to SA but wanted to re-book as soon as we could. We alerted Charlie Bates Cottage of this decision 8 days prior to our check

I was looking for an old home to spend a romantic getaway with my Partner.
Charlie Bates Cottage provided a historic setting with a lovely open fire and comfortable bed for our time away.
The cottage has a kitchen with microwave, oven and all the pots and pans you could ever need to self cater. The house was clean and tidy with a nice supply of firewood for the fire
We had a lovely stay and would recommend it to people looking for a HISTORIC home with a lovely old world feel.
