To keep your teeth and mouth in top shape, you should be visiting your dentist for an exam, checkup and clean at least twice a year. Regular brushing and flossing is important, but unfortunately is often not enough to remove the stubborn plaque and tartar that slowly accumulates on your teeth.

Despite the rapid pace of technical innovation in the techniques and materials available to dentists, whatever we do still comes a distant second to what nature gave you.Our approach is to empower and educate our patients that dental disease and failing teeth are not inevitable and that with the correct professional and home care advice, patients can prevent or significantly reduce the amount of dental treatments required.

Gingivitis is another name for inflamed gums. Plaque is a collection of food and bacteria that accumulates on teeth. This causes an inflammatory response as the body pumps blood to the area to fight the infection. This is why gums may bleed. Gingivitis is the most common disease affecting mankind. Many people feel that they are correctly brushing their teeth but upon our examination we can see that this is not the case.

Simple carbohydrates such as the sugars found in lollies, soft drinks and even certain types of fruit are a food source for the bacteria that naturally occurs in the mouth. When the bacteria feed on the sugar, they release an acid that attacks the hard, enamel surface of the tooth. Our bodies naturally protect the teeth by neutralising the acid through the production of saliva.

Our aim at Contemporary Smiles is to make every visit enjoyable for your child and to build a relationship where the child is happy to attend the dentist well into adulthood. At Contemporary Smiles a great deal of importance is placed on prevention, good oral hygiene and dietary habits from a young age.
