Castlemaine Child Care
Website
We are a not-for-profit community co-operative situated in the heart of Castlemaine in Central Victoria. We operate a 60-place long day care centre for children between the ages of six weeks and five years of age, including a full kinder and pre-kinder program. We also operate and manage Carinya Family Day Care scheme; a network of educators who provide programs for under school age in their own homes and school-age children in schools.

Our Family Day Care scheme offers daycare, before and after school care, holiday care, and 24-hour care. Castlemaine Childcare Co-operative has been providing accredited, quality child care since our centre was founded by a group of parents in 1979. The Co-operative continues to be governed by a Committee of Management of elected parents who are shareholders.
Services
The Castlemaine Childcare Co-operative, also known as "Carinya" which is the name of the building where our long day care centre is located, has a long history of service to the Castlemaine community. We have been operating since 1982 and many of our current parents came to the centre as children themselves.
As part of the former Castlemaine Education Centre, it was co-located in the old high school buildings in Mostyn Street. The facade of the old high school (and later home of the education centre), was retained in the development of the existing supermarket. In 1996 the decision was made to expand the centre to 60 places.
At least one parent of a child enrolled in the service - LDC or FDC - must become a shareholder member of the Co-operative. Any shareholder of the co-operative is able to stand for the Committee of Management which is responsible for the governance of the Co-operative, the long day care and family day care services.
At Carinya our philosophy is to provide a community of learning for all children, families, and educators, within a healthy and respectful environment where everyone has a right to feel safe, be heard and have opportunities to take acceptable risks. We strive to provide a culturally and emotionally safe environment where we all feel accepted, welcomed, and our differences and abilities are supported and celebrated.
All programs, in both services, are based on the principles outlined in the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF), the National Guide developed from the latest research of how children best learn and develop. Activities are based on children's interests and educators provide support, resources and direction so that each child is able to expand their skills and knowledge.
