The Australian Chitokai Karate Association was originally formed as the Australian Chito-Ryu Karate Association. Following an extraordinary meeting in early 2005, the membership voted to separate from the International Chito-Ryu Karate Federation and to pursue an independent study of the teachings and legacy of Dr. Tyuyoshi Chitose, the 6th Master of Tode, and the founder of the Chito-Ryu method.
The purpose of the not -for- profit association is to promote fellowship of its members who study Chitokai, and to follow the teachings of Dr Tsuyoshi Chitose, founder of Chito-Ryu. Through the pursuit of excellence in training and the exemplification of the values of martial arts we aim to make a positive contribution to the communities in which we live.

Writing any essay is a challenge, but I found this particularly difficult as I couldn't determine my topic. My last grading was to Sandan Shidoin in 1999 when I was 32. We've since had 3 beautiful and healthy daughters. Brian my husband has had a major and painful career shift from one of being a high school deputy principal to one of being self-employed martial arts professional.
Karate was first developed in Okinawa centuries ago, as a system of combat techniques. O'Sensei created Chitoryu after studying various Okinawan arts. He was also a medical practitioner who was concerned about the effects the old methods had on health, and so O'Sensei based Chitoryu on a combination of medical, physiological and scientific principles in order to promote health.
This essay is in an unusual format. It will be a combination of discussing research, my own experiences, and exploring the experiences of others through a survey. I would also like to be clear that this essay is not an attack on the martial arts industry. This essay is an exploration of an issue that is prominent in many areas of life, with a focus on how this issue works in a martial arts context.
I think that there are a number of eminently positive qualities common to Black Belts, this essay will focus on a single quality, and it may well be one that many Black Belts may not realise they possess. I believe that many of the Black Belt instructors are Attachment Figures for their students, particularly those students who are under the age of about 10 years old.
