19 km out of Genoa on your LEFT there is a turn-off marked TOURIST ROAD NO. 7 KARBEETHONG ROAD. Drive along this road for 2.5 km (watch out for Lyrebirds and Possums crossing!) until you come to an intersection between Karbeethong Avenue and Karbeethong Road, turn into Karbeethong Avenue. Tour Summary: Mountains, lakes and spectacular coastline are the highlights of the Lakeside & coastal tourist drive.
We have seen koalas crossing for their safety on the wide open and busy road off Mallacoota's roundabout and we also admired them crossing lakeside drive road. It was a lovely, sunny, calm beginning of the day. Magpies can be friendly, NOT ONLY swooping. I call Mallacoota the centre of the universe.
A very safe beach for small children (5 minutes drive to Betka River, ocean or beaches and lagoon). Drive down past the Hotel towards the Foreshore Camp Park. Turn right along Allan Drive to Captain's Point. You will pass the communal Church on the right, the big indoor Sports Hall and the Kindergarten.
This is a 45 minute drive from Mallacoota. Drive down Betka Road past the aerodrome and follow Centre Track, then left into Betka Track and finally turn left to the Old Coast Road to the camp. These tracks are narrow and steep in places and unsealed. This can also be a walk if preferred. Drive to the aerodrome and leave your car, follow the Old Coast Track 2 hour walk each way.
Would you be surprised to find a compost bucket in your holiday accommodation? This is what Peter Kurz supplies in his mudbrick holiday units in Mallacoota, Victoria. On my arrival as a guest I was led to his orchard and presented with a tasting of tiny, delectable mandarins and a basketful of them to take.

Great place to stay with a view over the lake. The birds came down to feed in the morning and evening as we sat in the window.

Only thing here is the view! these units need a really good update throughout! Very uninviting dusty place and communal laundry was filthy including the area around the outside was unswept, garden full of weeds!

Not that difficult to find in Karbethong. Occupied unit 6. Has two bedrooms Mum+Dad & then the kids one. Has an open living area, big front windows & a front yard (hammock, bbq, table & chairs and a garden with unexpected guests and a back part that makes up the rest of a Self contained unit) . Seed to feed the birds is provided. Panoramic views of the forests & water are second to none. Apparently there is fishing less than 300m away near "The Narrows" though unfortunately I cannot give credit to that. <5km to Mallacoota town by car or bike and the open water another 10mins down the way. At arrival begins a very pleasant experience. Having self catering, easy comfort, wonderful large shower stall, pleasant & quiet fellow visitors, abundant native birds awaiting feeding at the trough, a slumbering koala wedged in tree to be found car distance from 'town' and coastal points of interest... but who cares, what else needed for a restful short holiday.
