OSTEOPATHY is an approach to health care which emphasises the importance of a well functioning musculoskeletal system in the maintenance of good health. Any kind of joint ache, pain or stiffness whether it be in the back, the neck, the head, the arms or the legs can be an indication that there are underlying joint and muscle strains and these, left untreated, may upset a person's health generally.
Back pain affects at least 80% of Australians at some time in their lives and 50% of those affected will have recurring back problems. It is the most common cause of absenteeism from work. Osteopaths consider themselves to be "back experts" and provide well over one million treatments to Australians each year.
We have all heard of sciatica but just what is it? Often accompanied by lower back pain it is either burning or a toothache like pain felt in the buttock and leg, usually on one side but occasionally on both. It may be constant simply varying in intensity according to activities and body positions or the pain may come and go again according to activity and body position.
Growing children are extremely resilient but never-the-less the various falls and spills that they inevitably have while growing up can take their toll. As Osteopaths we feel that it is just as important for children to have regular Osteopathic check ups as it is for them to have regular dental check ups.
Whiplash - What is it? And what can we do about it? Have you ever been involved in a car accident? Most of us have at one time or another. Whiplash is a common term for the type of injuries which may occur when there are sudden acceleration-deceleration forces.
As your head is quite heavy, and is balanced on top of a flexible neck, if there is sudden acceleration or deceleration it will swing forwards or backwards, and may cause minor or major damage to the tissues of the neck. For example, if your car were to be hit from behind, the car would be suddenly pushed forward, and with it the car seat and your body - but the inertia of the head causes it to lag behind, stretching the front of the neck.
