There are times in our busy lives when our goals must sometimes be moved to accommodate our lifestyles. Orthodontics may be one of those times! At Shine our experienced orthodontists realise that our patients' wishes and goals have to be at the forefront of our treatment plans. Not everyone has the time (or finances) to obtain the absolute ultimate in treatment results.
Gone are the days when you have to wear visible braces on your teeth to correct tooth positioning. Developed in the United States in the late nineties, clear aligners, such as Invisalign, now allows almost invisible straightening of teeth using sets of see-through aligners.
The major benefits - apart from being unobtrusive - is that 1) they are customised to your teeth, 2) they start to work almost straight away, 3) they are more comfortable than conventional braces since they don't use metal brackets or wires that can irritate your mouth and gums, 4) they can be easily removed whenever you need to brush your teeth, or eat and drink and 5) the process generally works faster than traditional treatments using standard braces.

Orthognathic surgery, also known as corrective jaw surgery or surgical orthodontics, may be required to correct abnormalities of the jaws and teeth that cannot be addressed using standard non-surgical orthodontic methods alone. Misalignment is not uncommon, and may also be caused by birth defects, facial injury or more frequently genetic or family traits.
Cross-bite is a condition where the upper teeth do not 'fit' with the lower teeth when the teeth come together. Cross-bites can be genetic, or caused by unusual development of either the teeth or jaws (or both) when a child is growing, or where there is crowding of the teeth. It can also be caused by excessive thumb sucking, which may lead to changes in palate and tooth misalignment.
Spacing is the opposite of crowded teeth, where there are visible and sometimes large gaps between the teeth - sometimes known as 'gapped teeth'. Having extra space between your teeth, or widely spaced teeth / 'gapped teeth' can be caused by a range of factors - small teeth or larger jaw, i.e. your 'genes', or missing teeth.

Shine Orthodontics is truly the most professional, friendly and caring practice. Dr Tony Shields is seriously knowledgeable, and in my opinion the most talented orthodontist in the world. His techniques are world class and up to date with the latest cutting edge technology. Both my children have had their lives transformed by the incredible orthodontic improvements. The following is my opinion, I am NOT a medical practitioner and this is only ADVICE.
Tony Shields uses braces that were outdated over a decade ago, as per his website. His treatment plans are poor and do not consider airway or jaw position, only teeth. It is entirely possible you leave his practice with amazing teeth yet being highly unattractive and suffering from a breathing related sleep disorder.
REMEMBER, if your kids are seeing an orthodontist at age 10-12, IT IS TOO LATE. You must start before 5 years old ideally. 50% of craniofacial growth has occurred by age 5, so as the kid gets older

Just finished braces for my third child - a great practice and a great experience.
