Coogee Yoga is a boutique yoga studio, offering quality teaching of yoga in the Iyengar method in a light, warm and welcoming space. There is a strong focus on practice based learning where students are taught how to develop a safe and systematic progression into yoga postures. There is no need to feel intimidated by large classes.
Our small classes allow for a more personalised experience and greater attention given to your needs. You don't need to be flexible or 'physically' inclined to benefit from the principles and methods of yoga developed by B.K.S. Iyengar (1918 - 2014). Practicing his method of yoga, even for a short period of time, will improve your balance and flexibility, increase your stamina and strength and bring that awareness into your daily life.

Services
Our modern, fully equipped studio is located in St Brigid's Parish grounds in the suburb of Coogee. We teach exclusively in the Iyengar Yoga method. The practice of yoga helps to balance the body, mind and spirit. The word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root "yuj" which means to yoke, join, bind, and yoga provides a way to experience and bring together every aspect of ourselves: physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually.
Students are encouraged to establish a safe and systematic progression into correct yoga postures and to overcome their conditioned habits and patterns which can cause imbalance and restrictions. Emphasis is placed on correctness and precision in the placement and alignment of the body. Equipment known as yoga props are used to assist the student to facilitate the poses.
Sophie is the founder of Coogee Yoga. She is a fully trained and certified Iyengar teacher. She has been practicing yoga for many years and was inspired to start teaching after studying with Senior Iyengar teacher Glenn Ceresoli and his wife Margaret during their retreat in Goa, India. In 2011 she completed their intensive teacher training course in Byron Bay.
Classes will go for 60 minutes. There is a limit of 15 people per class so that we will be able to see you on our screen. Booking is essential, and at least 1 hour prior to class start time. To enrol in one of these online classes, use our booking system Kriya. Login to your account, pick the class you wish to attend and if you need, purchase one of the CLASS PASSES.
Continuing our free mindfulness practice events from last year we are extending an invitation to join us for a late afternoon Mindful Walk in Centennial Park. Walking meditation in nature is a beautiful way to calm the mind as we slow down and absorb the pace of nature as it gently penetrates our breathing and steps.

Sophie’s teaching technique with a focus on correct alignment using props is fantastic. I leave every class with a new awareness of my body and how yoga poses should feel instead of how they look. The studio is clean, classes are small and Covid-safe practices are in place. Highly recommend!

The Coogee Yoga teachers are very experienced and professional. Postures are continuously explained and corrected. No risk of injury or bad position. Groups are small and the atmosphere is serene. A moment of relaxation and refocusing on your body after a day of work or stress. After two years of practice, my back pain has considerably improved and even disappeared !

I would encourage everyone to try a class at coogee yoga regardless of age or flexibility. The Iyengar method of yoga and the use of props allows the students to practice yoga safely with no fear of injuring themselves and Sophie, Pauline and Kasia take care with each student based on their individual needs. I have tried many yoga schools over the years and this one is a rare treat! I always leave feeling like I've done myself a favour.
