Stead Cycles was founded back in 1923 after Charlie Stead started his bicycle apprenticeship in Newcastle in the early 1900's. When the 1st world war started Charlie and his brother Bert put their ages up and went to England for their training and then across to France to prepare for battle.
After being wounded twice, Charlie went back to England where he was put on light duties in the Raleigh bicycle factory in Nottingham, where he continued his craft building bikes.When he returned to Australia he started his own business in 1923 on Maitland Road, Mayfield with his wife Ina Stead, later relocating to the eastern side of Maitland Road, where the old shop still stands today.

Wow! After visiting 3 other bike shops, Steads Cycles at Beresfield certainly ticked all the boxes. Great range of bikes, make you feel welcome, excellent knowledge on their products, great deals and resonable prices. So happy with my purchase and the service I received today. If you're looking for a bike or information on them, make sure you pop in and see the young lad ( well young at heart lol) named Craig lol. Both he and Elisha were a pleasure to deal with. Highly rcommend!

What fantastic customer service! Extremely knowledgeable, so friendly, no pressure to buy or add on pitches. Whilst purchasing a bmx, he adjusted everything on the bike for my son, taught him how to take care of his bike and then helped to get it in the car.

This place is amazing for customer service and range. Whatever you want to know or questions you have they are only too happy to help. I can see why they have such good reviews and have been in business so long. All staff were knowledgeable and passionate from the very start and only to happy to help. When picking up our bikes they were ready and we were shown everything we needed to know. Very happy with prices and assistance. Just can't speak highly enough of Aleshia's friendly customer service and knowedge. Craig was wonderful running us through the bikes on pick up and nothing was a problem

I generally do my own repairs on our family's bikes which includes upgrades. The range of spare parts and accessories at stead cycles is unreal. They even had the wheels I needed to get my sons scooter going again. They are pretty much on par with online prices and I get to support a small family business. Definatly worth speaking to the team at stead!
