PTW Architects practice legacy is Peddle Thorp and Walker, a partnership between James Peddle, brothers Samuel and Frank Thorp and Ernest Walker. James Peddle, as foundational partner, established the practice in 1889 and invited his capable articled students to join him as partners - Samuel Thorp (1914), Ernest Walker (1925) and Frank Thorp (1929).
Peddle's continuing legacy includes an outward looking approach to seeking new ideas, approaches and technologies to adapt and innovate in design, documentation and construction; a commitment to improving social living conditions and an encouragement of staff to travel, study and work overseas. This legacy positioned the firm's ability to increasingly undertake diverse, commercial and institutional projects.

Our commitment to our Reconciliation Action Plan has resulted in receiving endorsement for our Reconciliation Action Plan 'Reflect' phase from Reconciliation Australia in 2019. PTW is proud to present our first Reconciliation Action Plan. This document sets out our formal commitment to the process of reconciliation in Australia.
We are enriched by our highly diverse team, which exceeds the 40:40:20 targets throughout every level of the practice (including 50% female directors). We are proudly progressing through the 'reflect' phase of our Reconciliation Action Plan with Reconciliation Australia and benefit from our indigenous team members and industry engagement.
PTW has a proud legacy as a founding member of the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) in 2002 and maintains an active, ongoing membership. As Australia's authority on sustainable buildings, communities and cities, PTW is guided by the GBCA vision to lead the sustainable transformation of Australia's built environment, create healthy, resilient and positive places for people and the natural environment.
James Peddle was a master furniture craftsman with knowledge of the English Arts and Crafts movement and in 1889 he supervised a commission for the new impressive Australia Hotel. At this time he established an office as an architectural artist with a focus on residential projects. Samuel G Thorp joined the office as an articled pupil in 1902, becoming a partner by 1915.
