The Driving School delivers a comprehensive range of truck and heavy vehicle driving lessons, one-day and condensed training courses for all heavy vehicle licence types. An LR Licence is a relatively easy truck licence to obtain. It covers you to drive small trucks (up to 8 tonne GVM) and mini-buses including Toyota Commuters, Coasters, Mitsubishi Rosas and most small motorhomes.
This licence covers a class MR vehicle, which is a truck or bus (including a prime mover or a mobile crane) over 8t GVM with a maximum of 2 axles. You may also tow a trailer with a maximum weight of 9t GVM. Need to get an HR ticket? This driving licence enables you to drive a class HR vehicle (a truck or bus over 8t GVM with more than 2 axles) and you may also tow a trailer with a maximum weight of 9t GVM.

The Licence that you currently hold makes a big difference on the Licence you want to obtain. If you're looking to drive a small truck (4.5 - 8 tonnes) for work or travel around Australia in a motorhome, you'll need an LR licence. At The Driving School in Arundel on the Gold Coast, our experienced truck driving instructors can train you up and get you moving quickly with our flexible light rigid licence courses.
An MR (Medium Rigid) licence covers any truck or bus with 2 axles. You must have held a car licence or higher for at least 12 months to be eligible for this truck licence. There are 3 types of Medium Rigid Licence - these are different because of their conditions (gearbox restrictions). No restrictions on gearbox - can drive any MR vehicle with an Automatic, synchromesh or non synchromesh gearbox i.e. double clutching technique.
An HR (Heavy Rigid) Licence is the highest class of truck licence you can obtain from holding a car licence. You must hold a car (Open or P class) or higher drivers licence class for at least 24 months to be eligible for an HR licence (12 months for MR (Medium Rigid). There are 3 types of Heavy Rigid Licence - these are different because of their conditions (gearbox restrictions).
An HC (Heavy Combination) is a truck or prime mover towing one trailer. You must hold an MR (Medium Rigid) or HR (Heavy Rigid) licence for at least 12 months to be eligible for this heavy vehicle licence class. There are 3 types of Heavy Combination Licence - these are different because of their conditions (gearbox restrictions).
An MC (Multi Combination) is a vehicle towing more than one trailer. You must have held an HR (Heavy Rigid) or HC (Heavy Combination) licence for at least 12 months to be eligible for this truck licence class. There are 3 types of Multi Combination Licence - these are different because of their conditions (gearbox restrictions).

Highly recommend! Completed my LR with Peter from The Driving School. He was extremely knowledgeable and helpful with a great method for teaching and a calm(ing), professional manner. Great instruction on exactly how to apply road rules, gave tips, pointed out tricks and traps - ready for test and any driving situation.
The value of the school is in taking the guess work out of everything; they teach exactly what you need to know, organise TMR paperwork/bookings, test prep, test day organised - a well oiled machine!

All the staff, from the instructors to the reception were very knowledgeable, friendly and accomodating to all of my learning needs and availability. I enjoyed every single 1 of my lessons. The Driving School at Arundel and all the team were awesome. Gary and Chris provided relaxed and simply easy to understand truck driving training. The office crew were insanely helpful and keep you up to date especially though COVID snap lockdowns when I had a test booked that needed rescheduling and they take care of everything for you. Top notch, use them again and there just a really great bunch of people and highly recommend them.

The whole process of getting my HR licence from initial contact to passing my driving test was impeccable. From explanation of the theory questions and patient driving instruction from Gary are a credit to a company focusing on delivering safe, knowledgeable & responsive drivers. As a female driver often challenged in a male dominated industry, I was treated with dignity and respect throughout the whole process.
