Traffic Engineering involves the application of scientific theory and judgement to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the roads and intersections. It starts with an understanding of the drivers of travel demand and how this varies over space and time. Good traffic engineering comes from a detailed appreciation of the underlying theory, coupled with practical experience of proven solutions, their benefits and impacts.
The role of the expert witness is to assist the court in the administration of justice, by providing an opinion or factual information based on the expert's competence in a subject, which is outside the knowledge, skill or experience of most people. The primary duty of an expert is to the court. The expert owes a secondary duty to the body of knowledge and understanding to which they subscribe.
Transport planning aims to integrate the higher order objectives from engineering, town planning and economics to deliver sustainable, safe and cost effective development. To be successful, the process requires a sound understanding of the cross-disciplinary trade-offs faced by government, firms and individuals operating in an increasingly complex social setting.
Under the auspices of the Centre for Transport, Energy and Environment, PTT collates, summarises and interprets valuable data on Australia's transport task from a range of published and un-published government and private sources to produce the 'Australian Transport Facts' report. Historical time series data dating back to 1984/85 plus 10 year forecasts at the state and national levels.
