Atisha Centre is a peaceful retreat centre and hub of Buddhist education, nestled in the quiet native bushland of central Victoria, near Bendigo. Founded in 1981, the Centre provides a serene and welcoming setting for all who seek time out from busy lives or wish to learn about and practise Buddhism.
His Holiness the 14th the Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso, is the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people. Born to a peasant family, His Holiness was recognised at the age of two, in accordance with Tibetan tradition, as the reincarnation of his predecessor the 13th Dalai Lama, and thus an incarnation of Avalokitesvara, the Buddha of Compassion.
In 2011 Kyabje Zopa Rinpoche showed the aspect of a stroke. He expressed then, how important it is to have facilities to be able to live out the life in a Dharma environment. Rinpoche's comment sparked an interest in me for the project, but the time was not right. I was in long retreat and then in Mongolia.
Circumambulating holy objects such as stupas creates enormous merit for good karmic results in the future and positively transforms the mind. Building stupas and helping to create causes for others to be able to build stupas, by donating money, is equally merit creating. It is also one of the methods of purifying aeons of negative karma.
With the very rare exception, all events are open to everybody to attend. Our resident teacher, Venerable Geshe Rabten, together with his translator Venerable Lobsang Dorje are highly qualified to teach the Buddhadharma.
