I've always loved fabric and sewing. I studied textile design at the Scottish College of Textiles before moving to Sydney in the early 1990s. When I arrived in Sydney I was lucky to land a job with the artist Ken Done, translating his iconic Australian images into fabrics suitable for swimwear, clothing, and accessories.

In 2000, I started my own business, Surface Art, where I designed, hand printed and sewed products to sell at local markets including Paddington, Bondi and The Rocks markets. Surface Art was all about making and selling stylish cushions, homewares and fabric by-the-metre.

Do not soak the fabric Do not leave the fabric-sitting wet - hang to dry immediately after washing. Drip dry in shade. Do not tumble dry. If you have chosen to launder your fabric in an unsuitable detergent or not in the recommended way, we cannot take responsibility for damage to the fabric.
Follow Surface Art Australia on Facebook and Surface Art on Instagram to keep up with the latest news, opening times, sales, and product launches. For Surface Art, sustainability is not an afterthought. Our business was founded to be Australian and to help keep the local textile industry alive. From the beginning, we have been committed to designing and selling locally, in the community where we live and work. In fact, all of our design, and much of the production of our clothing and homewares is completed within 5km of our Leichhardt studio in inner west Sydney.
I thought I'd share some of the results and respond to some of the specific requests. I was pleased to learn that the things I value in creating clothing are the same things that you look for when buying clothes. I value quality, fit, originality, and being Australian made. I didn't have it among the options, but a lot of you said that you look for natural fibres - I do too!
