Erin Wilkins is an experienced speech pathologist specialising in early intervention. She can help children who have difficulties with comprehension, expressive language, articulation of sounds, stuttering, and developmental disorders. Our attention is attracted - and held - by things that interest us, whether that is a particular food we want to eat, books we want to read, or toys we want to play with.
The length of a child's attention span depends on how interesting they find an activity. They're shiny and shimmery; they can be huge or tiny. Sometimes they float up and sometimes down. They pop unexpectedly, perhaps in your face or maybe not until they've bounced a few times on the floor. But why are bubbles so fantastic for language development?

I completed a Master of Speech and Language Pathology at Macquarie University in 2008. I'm a member of Speech Pathology Australia and a Certified Practising Speech Pathologist. My aim is to empower parents and caregivers to support their children in becoming confident and successful communicators. My philosophy is that learning should be fun!
Children can experience difficulty with both receptive and expressive language, or there may be a difficulty in just one of these areas. Receptive language is our ability to understand what is said to us. When someone asks us a question, gives an instruction or explains something, we need to understand the specific words and sentences they use in order to respond appropriately.
Around 13% of Australian children have a communication difficulty. Speech Pathology, also known as speech therapy, involves helping these children who have problems communicating. At SmallTalk Speech & Language Therapy, Erin Wilkins specialises in working with children who have any of the above communication difficulties.
The following is a guideline of typical language development. There is a wide range of normal development and many children will reach different stages at different times. If you feel your child is behind in their development of language it is recommended that they have a language assessment. Can tell a long story in sequence, however they might not stick to the same idea throughout the whole story.
