The client wanted a Paddington terrace, and all the charm that goes with that as well as doing something creative and contemporary with the rear of the property. Also one of the typical problems with these properties is light and ventilation and that needed to be resolved. The solution was to place the new kitchen to one side pushing the amenities to the back and therefore, opening up the house to the backyard.
The original small and very run down workers cottage was in a heritage conservation area. Knowing that the local council would expect the existing structure to remain as part of the new design the Architect created a distinct contrast between the old house and the extension and set up a respectful dialogue between the two sections.
This apartment is located amongst the city skyline and enjoys views to Sydney's great icons, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House. The apartment required an upgrade to the kitchen, bathrooms and general level of finishes that would reflect the sophisticated location and views.
This build proved to be quiet challenging as we were restricted in taking all materials, tools and equipment via standard residents lifts 18 levels above ground level to the apartment foyer.All lift access required pre planning to ensure that we were able to cause the least amount of disturbance to the other residents.
