JMA Psychology Canberra
Psychologist Canberra offering warm, supportive & practical counselling for anyone of any age struggling with depression, anxiety, addictions. Couples and marriage counselling also provided. My name is Jacqui McCabe-Austin and I am a Psychologist Canberra ACT and offer therapies for a broad range of mental health issues.

At JMA Psychology we provide individual therapy to Adults and Adolescents. Therapy sessions are designed to address a range of day to day problems by helping the client to develop greater self-awareness, promote values based action and the use of effective coping strategies.
Services
The main approach to counselling and coaching used at JMA Psychology Canberra is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT - pronounced as the word "act" not the initials, especially not in Canberra!). ACT is part of what is being called the 'third wave' of therapies which focus on thoughts, feelings and actions, and how they interact with each other (CBT, for example, is described as part of the 'second wave').
My name is Jacqui McCabe-Austin, and I am the principal psychologist at JMA Psychology Canberra. Unfortunately we are currently at capacity and our books are closed to new clients only until further notice. I am a registered and practising psychologist with over 30 years experience, starting out originally in Brisbane where I was first qualified in 1987.
We tailor our marriage psychologist counselling services in Canberra to you and your partner's personal needs, goals and financial situation. We employ the most effective couple and marriage therapies for reducing conflict, restoring trust and respect, improving communication, and promoting greater harmony and intimacy in a marriage or couple relationship.
Unfortunately we are currently at capacity and our books are closed to new clients only until further notice. If you are under a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan and eligible for a Medicare rebate, you will currently receive $86.15 rebate from Medicare per session.

Each GP Mental Health Care Plan covers you for six rebated sessions with an additional four sessions available after review by your doctor, making a maximum total of ten sessions in a calendar year. Some private health insurance policies may cover counselling sessions with a psychologist - contact your insurer for details.
We've certainly seen some of our clients 'on and off' for more than a year, but the average number of sessions concentrating on a particular problem is around six, dependent upon the complexity of the issue/s, how long you've been burdened by them.

Whilst we encourage clients to 'book ahead' to ensure that you don't end up with massive gaps between sessions, you are never under any obligation to continue with counselling (even previously booked sessions) at any time. No, there are no 'hard and fast' rules that we follow at JMA Psychology Canberra, except that the client comes first, and that we follow where our clients lead.

Thank goodness for Jacqui!
I had been in counselling for many years.
Each strategy brought some level of healing.
Some treatments took days to get over.
Jacqui has been able to help me deal with my strong emotions and horrible memories. Connecting feelings with past experiences has been transformative!
Gone are feelings of hopelessness , physical and mental exhaustion.
Jacqui continues to grow her skills and knowledge.
I am so thankful for Jacqui's amazing skills and genuiness, every session. I am well!
The journey has been worth it! Deirdre

Highly recommended for overwhelm and anxiety, I found my mind completely quietening down and it lasted more than one day...after the 10 sessions I was able to manage much of my own head chatter so that I could focus and function. thank you Jacqui
