Welcome to the Karuna Centre, Canberra: Counselling for individuals, couples and families.

The Karuna Centre, Canberra (incorporated in 2003), provides offices and administrative services for a group of like- minded independent practitioners offering individual, couple and family therapy. I am a registered clinical family therapist with over 25 years experience. My approach to therapy emphasizes understanding the context in which people are experiencing difficulties in their lives.
Services
What kind of therapy do we do? We have all studied and worked in Family Therapy, Systemic Therapy, Narrative Therapy and associated fields. Family Therapy has its origins in the USA in the 1950's.

At that time a growing number of practitioners became increasingly uneasy with the prevailing practice of focusing on the inner life of clients without taking into account the significant relationships in their lives and the part that those relationships played in the clients problems.Since then a wide range of models have developed under the umbrella term of 'Family Therapy'.
Confidentiality goes hand in hand with our commitment to working collaboratively. You decide who is involved in, or consulted about, the issues brought to counselling. We discuss these issues with you at the first session and continuously throughout the helping process. For instance, if a referral agency or person requires a report, we will consult with you (the client) about this report and how it will be written.
The Karuna Centre offers professionals clinical supervision and consultation, program/service evaluation and training. The team at the Karuna Centre offers a range of supervision and consultation services to other professionals working in the counselling and community work field.

A number of the Karuna Centre professionals also have been involved in research and evaluation of various program areas such as parenting after separation, mental health, domestic violence and integrated practice.
