No, physiotherapists are first order practitioners so you do not need a referral. UNLESS you are claiming workcover in which case you must be referred and always covered by a medical certificate, VETERANS require a yearly medical certificate and INSURANCE claims also generally require a medical referral.
Back pain effects such a large percentage of our population both sporty and sedentary. So much so that many of us just assume that it is "normal" and that there is nothing to be done but put up and shut up. Physiotherapy is one of many modalities that can assist with back pain management.
There are many causes of back pain, your physiotherapist will be able to assess you and help to diagnose the reason for your pain, which structures are involved, what is causing these structures to be problematic and then devise a treatment program to assist in the resolution of the problem.

Neck pain is a very common problem in our "electronic device-centric" world. Posture and prolonged positioning can play a large role in the development of neck pain, which can be muscular, joint or nerve related. Some sports also have a high incidence of neck pain, for example swimming. Some symptoms associated with neck injury that you may not be aware of are headaches, nausea, dizziness, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), difficulty swallowing.
Headaches are quite literally a pain in the neck (and head obviously). They are also of varying origin. Some headaches arise from the cervical spine (neck area) and can be caused by joint, nerve or muscle referral. Some people experience other symptoms alongside their headaches, such as visual disturbance, tinnitus, dizziness, nausea.
