Only a small minority actually seek help. Levels of stress have been increasing over the last 5 years and 35% of Australians are significantly distressed.
In this disorder, you have distressing intrusive thoughts or images and seek to reduce your anxiety by carrying out rituals or compulsions to reduce the anxiety of the thought. The compulsions can take up a lot of your time. The thoughts are often around doing harm to others or yourself, germs and contamination or doing something shameful.
Agoraphobia occurs when you fear having a panic attack in a particular place and help is not available or you can't get away easily. It is not the fear of open spaces as is commonly believed. Most commonly, agoraphobia involves a fear of going into places where it might be difficult or embarrassing to escape quickly if you have a panic attack and need to get away.
