Services
Should glasses be prescribed, the Optical Oasis team can show you a great range of eyewear with the best quality lenses. Eye examinations for holders of Health Care Cards and children are bulk-billed to Medicare whenever possible. Additional charges may apply for specialized new technology tests like OCT (with reduced rates for those with Health Care Card).
Short-sightedness or myopia causes blurred distance vision (eg. the board or screen at school). Then research began finding a link with prolonged close work (computer and phone screens and book reading). The latest research an additional important factor: time spent outdoors.* Children who spend little time outdoors are more likely to become more short-sighted than children who enjoy outdoor activities.
The OCT scanning machine creates amazing three-dimensional color images of your retina and its various layers in great detail. An OCT scan is painless and very quick (takes less than a minute) and does not usually require eyedrops. This technology helps enormously to identify a variety of retinal health issues at the very earliest stage, particularly macula degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic eye disease (retinopathy).
OCT Scanning is the state of the art technology for macula examination - available now in Mentone. How is AMD detected? There are a number of tests available including the letter chart test, the Amsler Grid test and viewing the retina with an ophthalmoscope. Currently the best way to detect AMD is to do an OCT scan.
The biggest risk factors for Macular Degeneration (AMD) are age and having a family history of the disease. Reduce alcohol intake if you are a heavy drinker (heavy drinkers have around double the risk). Eat healthy - a diet that is low in vegetables and fruit or high in processed foods and red meat increases risk of AMD.
