Chinese medicine, also known as Traditional Chinese Medicine or TCM, is the umbrella-term for the healing modalities of acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, Chinese massage including acupressure, cupping, moxibustion, dietary therapy, lifestyle advice, movement therapies such as Tai Chi, and meditative therapies such as Qi Gong.
Chinese medicine has developed over the course of more than three thousand years in relative isolation. As a result, it has its own very unique system of diagnosis. A typical visit involves the practitioner asking a (sometimes long) list of questions. You will be asked, in depth, about the nature of your illness, your medical history, and your lifestyle and diet.
Every patient is different, and therefore so is each treatment, however it is helpful to know what an "average" treatment course might look like.
Initial visit focus on getting a thorough understanding of your health picture, starting with the condition for which you are attending, but including your general physical condition (potentially including some aspects which you may not think are related to your main complaint), your diet and lifestyle and emotional/mental health.

A typical visit begins with diagnosis through questioning, tongue diagnosis and pulse diagnosis. If this is not your first visit, these techniques are still applied to monitor progress. Depending on the diagnosis, most treatments involve a combination of acupuncture and herbal medicine - acupuncture is applied during your visit and you are given herbs to take at home.
Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medical treatment technique believed to have been practised as early as 4000 years ago. It involves the insertion of a number of extremely fine needles into various acupuncture points along the Qi (energy) pathways within the body. Whilst truly ancient, acupuncture's flexible theoretical framework means it is still highly relevant in treating the illnesses of our current time.
