Services
Red Boat Kung Fu in Redfern Sydney is the global headquarters of Sifu Rick Spain's unique method of Wing Chun Kung Fu. We provide a safe and friendly environment for people of all levels of experience and all ages. We are primarily an adults school, but have a small but strong Kid'sKung Fu program currently operating during the school term on Saturdays at 11am.
Wing Chun Kung Fu is a Southern Chinese Boxing Martial Arts system, developed in China approximately 400 years ago. It came about during a time of civil war, up until that period most (if not all) Chinese Martial Arts were based on animal movements, hence took many years to learn as the movements were unnatural to human functionality.
WING CHUN KUNG FU was created and developed in the southern Shaolin Temples of China over 400 years ago. Although there is still evidence of the five animals in Wing Chun (the five animal styles are the predecessor of all systems) it is considered the first of the human systems and is soundly based on logic, economy of movement and leverage.
There are very few things training can't fix: the mental and physical benefits, the emotional, the spiritual, it's all there. You have to seek out the right mat culture though, then all you have to to is turn up and the magic takes care of itself. Regardless of your age, and mine is 62, being able to do Kung Fu and BJJ is an achievement anyone can aspire to.
Whether you're new to martial arts or are a seasoned athlete there will always be questions, if yours is not answered here please call or email us today as we are more than happy to help. There is street parking along Regent Street/Botany road. It is 1 hour, un-metered. Parallel to us is plenty of parking on Cope Street where you will even find a carpark, plus un-metered and unrestricted parking on Raglan Street.

Very professional and friendly environment. Sifu himself is very knowledgeable and will get the best of you either if you like it or not, You will never leave kwoon painless. All his trainers and Simu are the same. You will feel here welcomed and will learn enormous amount of knowledge not just how to defend yourself but even about your inner self. I will never regret the moment stepping through that door my first time. Definitely one of my best decisions I have ever made.

Red Boat Kung Fu is a modern take on self defence, kung fu, BJJ and boxing. While blending the best of traditional and modern training its clear that Red Boat Kung Fu is one of the best places to train in Australia. There is an active, family based community based on values that request that you become a better, well rounded person.

Sifu and all the other teachers are incredibly experienced, and the school has an excellent culture of seniors supporting beginners. This is a school where everyone who wants to learn is welcome. There are also plenty of classes plus the school is often open if you want to show up early to train.
I've gone through the search for a decent martial arts school multiple times in different cities and noticed that cost doesn't always mean quality. Here I feel you really get a lot of value for your membership and that the owners use that income to make the school better. The only limit is your own initiative

I have been training with Red Boat Kung Fu for over 6 years and the improvements in strength, flexibility and agility are extraordinary. Sifu Rick Spain and Amy Spain are excellent teachers and coaches that provide a positive, friendly mat culture that you do not find in many other martial arts schools. If you are thinking of trying Wing Chun or BJJ then stop thinking and start doing. All you need to do is show up, and do the work, the rewards will follow.

I've been training here for close to 4 years now and this is what I can say about it:
The classes won't just get you fit, rather they will challenge you to BE fit in order to keep up.
You'll go for the martial arts skills, and take home not only that, but lessons for your whole life.
In your training buddies, you'll find true friends.
This is not your regular gym. It's a school, and a family. I can only be grateful to have found it and for the outstanding coaching of Sifu Rick, Amy and all other masters.

Having trained at Red Boat Kung Fu since 1987 I can honestly that it is by far one of the best martial arts schools that I have ever trained at bar none. The instruction with Sifu Rick Spain is top notch, the members are like one big family and the facility is awesome.

The mat culture of Red Boat Kung Fu is wonderful: everyone is there together, with seniors mentoring juniors and everyone treating each other with respect. Sifu is a wonderful teacher, not just in terms of his knowledge and wisdom, but in his engagement with students; he is a very inspirational teacher!

I have trained at Redboat Wing Chun for the past five years.
You will not find a more knowledgeable coach than Sifu Rick Spain. His holistic approach to martial arts training has been developed through real world experience and an open minded outlook.
The mat culture and general friendliness of the school is second to none.

I attended here but only for a couple of classes. Its a very unorthodox style. Seems credible at first as they have a great website, but teachers are overweight, and it doesn't convince me of being that effective. Its very informal classes and instructors don't seem that experienced, as some of them are not even Asian. I am Asian and as a girl it did not convince me of being a strong style. maybe its just me ...but thats what my impression was.
