Susan has 20 years experience working in psychology. She began her psychology career working in the Macquarie University Anxiety Research Unit (MUARU), now the Emotional Health Clinic (EHC), on a research project investigating risk factors for anxiety in preschool-aged children under Professor Ron Rapee.
The beginnings of CBT date back to the 1950s and 1960s and now a large body of evidence exists which shows the effectiveness of CBT for many psychological problems and managing life stressors.
CBT addresses unhelpful thinking patterns (the 'cognitive') and unhelpful patterns of responding (the 'behaviour') which tend to maintain symptoms such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders, stress, relationship problems, and a large range of other psychological difficulties.

ACT is a relatively new therapeutic approach which combines a range of techniques and skills from existing evidence-based therapies. The aims of ACT are 1) creating a value-based, meaningful life, 2) to reduce suffering, 3) to increase flexibility in responding to life, and 4) to spend more time in the present moment instead of feeling stuck in the past or worrying about the future.
Exposure and response prevention (ERP) is the first line psychological therapy for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and it is also effective in treating other anxiety disorders. ERP is primarily a behavioural treatment and it involves confronting the thoughts, images, or situations that make a person with OCD anxious, and then resisting the compulsive behaviours that most people with OCD engage in when they feel anxious.
For many people, a lack of confidence when it comes to being assertive and communicating effectively is a large part of their anxiety, depression, work, or relationship difficulties. Assertiveness and effective communication is not just something you are born with - it is a skill. Like any skill, with a better understanding about how it works, and with lots of practice, anyone can improve the way in which they communicate with others.
